Copper(II) chloride dihydrate is a hydrate that is the dihydrate form of copper(II) chloride. It occurs naturally as the mineral eriochalcite. It has a role as an EC 5.3.3.5 (cholestenol Delta-isomerase) inhibitor. It is a hydrate and a halide mineral.
Copper(II) chloride dihydrate may be used in a variety of applications including use as a chlorinating agent; oxidizing agent; Lewis acid; or catalyst for conjugate additions and acylation. Copper(II) chloride is an effective catalyst for the tetrahydropyranylation of alcohols, using mild conditions and in high yields. Used with palladium in a catalytic synthesis of 3-haloindoles via an annulation process. Copper(II) chloride is also used in the synthesis of organic compounds and is able to chlorinate the alpha position of carbonyl compounds.
