Here are the materials you'll need:
Step 1: To create the snowflake shape, cut a pipe cleaner into three equal sections. Twist the sections together at the centre to form a six-sided snowflake shape that will fit inside the jar.
Step 2: Attach a string to one of the snowflake arms, tying the other end of the string to a pencil. Adjust the length of the string so that the pencil can hang the snowflake into the jar.
Step 3: Fill the wide-mouth jar with boiling water, preparing it for the crystal growth.
Step 4: Slowly add one tablespoon of Sodium Tetraborate (Borax) 5% Solution at a time to the boiling water, stirring after each addition to dissolve the borax. In total, you should add three tablespoons of the borax solution to the water. Don't worry if some of the borax remains undissolved as it won't affect the process.
Step 5: Hang the pipe cleaner snowflake into the jar, ensuring that the pencil rests on top of the jar and the snowflake is fully submerged in the liquid. Be careful not to let the snowflake touch the bottom of the jar.
Step 6: Allow the snowflake to set overnight, giving the crystals enough time to grow and form.
Step 7: The next day, carefully remove the snowflake from the liquid. Your DIY snowflake is ready!
