How to Remove Stubborn Stains

Stubborn stains are easier to manage when the right cleaning product is matched to the type of mark. Limescale, grease, odours, rust staining and everyday household marks often need different approaches, rather than one product used across every surface.

APC Pure supplies practical cleaning essentials including Acetic Acid 6% Solution, Citric Acid Monohydrate, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate and Hydrogen Peroxide 3% Food Grade. Each product works differently, so choosing the right option helps avoid wasted effort and reduces the risk of damaging surfaces.

Before You Start

Always test on a small hidden area first, especially on fabric, painted surfaces, treated wood, stone, grout or coloured materials. Use gloves where appropriate, keep the area ventilated and follow the product label.

Do not mix cleaning chemicals. Chlorine bleach mixed with acidic products, including vinegar or acetic acid, can release harmful gas. Hydrogen peroxide should also not be mixed with vinegar or acetic acid.

Limescale and Hard Water Marks

Limescale forms when minerals from hard water dry onto taps, sinks, shower screens and kettles. Acidic cleaners are usually the most suitable option for these deposits.

Acetic Acid 6% Solution is a practical option for light limescale and mineral marks on suitable household surfaces. It can be applied to affected areas, left briefly, then rinsed away thoroughly.

Citric Acid Monohydrate is also useful for limescale, especially where a powder format is preferred. It can be dissolved in warm water and applied to affected areas such as kettles, taps and shower fittings.

Avoid leaving acidic products on plated finishes for long periods, and do not use them on acid-sensitive stone such as marble, limestone or travertine.

Grease and Oily Marks

Greasy stains often need loosening before they can be wiped away. Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, also known as sodium bicarbonate, can help with light grease, odours and residue on hard surfaces, particularly when used as a gentle paste with water.

Apply the paste to the affected area, leave briefly, then wipe with a damp cloth. For cookware, trays and washable hard surfaces, repeat if needed rather than using excessive abrasion.

Do not use abrasive pastes on delicate coatings, polished surfaces or anything likely to scratch.

Odours and Everyday Household Marks

Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate is often used where odour control is needed, such as bins, fridges, carpets and upholstery. It should be kept dry until use and removed fully after treatment.

For carpets and soft furnishings, sprinkle lightly, leave for a short period, then vacuum thoroughly. Test first on dark or delicate fabrics to check for visible residue.

Rust Marks and Metal Staining

Citric Acid Monohydrate can help with some rust staining on suitable surfaces. It should be used carefully, as acids may react with or mark certain metals, stone and finishes.

Use a mild solution, apply only to the stained area, then rinse and dry. For valuable, coated or unknown materials, test first or use a surface-specific cleaner.

Light Fabric Stains

Hydrogen Peroxide 3% Food Grade can be useful for some light stains on white washable fabrics. APC Pure also supplies Hydrogen Peroxide 12% Food Grade, which should be handled with extra care due to its higher concentration.

Hydrogen peroxide can lighten coloured materials, so patch testing is essential before use. Apply carefully to the stained area, allow a short contact time, then rinse or wash as normal.

Do not use hydrogen peroxide on wool, silk, leather or coloured fabrics unless the care label and patch test confirm it is suitable.

Final Cleaning Tips

Work gradually, rinse surfaces well and dry them afterwards to reduce new water marks. For stubborn staining, repeated mild treatment is usually better than using a stronger product on an unsuitable surface.

APC Pure products can support routine stain removal across the home, garage and workshop when used carefully and matched to the material being cleaned.
