Below is a brief overview of some common chemicals and their uses:
Acetone
Acetone is a quick-acting solvent that can be used to thin, clean, and remove resins, inks, adhesives, and contact cement. It is also useful for thinning and cleaning fiberglass. As a heavy degreaser, it can be used to clean metal surfaces prior to painting.
Mineralised Methylated Spirits
Also known as paint thinner, this petroleum distillate solvent is commonly used in the manufacturing and thinning of oil-based paints. Odourless mineral spirits have been refined to remove some odourful components. It is an effective paint thinner and can be used for cleaning brushes or rollers after painting.

Rust Remover
This solution, which contains mineralised methylated spirits, is applied with a stiff brush and allowed to dry for 12 to 24 hours, depending on humidity (check the manufacturer's labeling and literature). It dissolves rust from metal surfaces and forms a metal shield that can be painted. Rust remover products can be harsh on the skin, so protective gloves should be worn.
