What is 1-Octene? It is an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H16. It is an alkene with a linear chain and a double bond between carbon atoms 1 and 2. It is a clear, colourless liquid with a mild odour and a relatively low melting point. It is primarily used in the production of polyethylene, which is one of the most widely used plastics in the world. It is also used in the synthesis of other chemicals such as linear aldehydes, linear alcohols, and plasticisers. In addition, it can be used as a solvent in various industrial applications.
Consistent Quality: We provide only high-quality 1-Octene 97%, ensuring reliable and consistent performance for all applications.
Shipped from Manchester, UK Facility: Sourced and bottled using non-toxic, chemical-resistant containers, ensuring reliable quality for our customers.
Plastic production
The main use of 1-octene is as a comonomer in production of polyethylene. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) use approximately 2–4% and 8–10% of comonomers, respectively.
Chemical synthesis
Another significant use of 1-octene is for production of linear aldehyde via oxo synthesis (hydroformylation) to give the C9 aldehyde (nonanal). Oxidation of this aldehyde gives the short-chain fatty acid nonanoic acid. Hydrogenation of the same aldehyde gives the fatty alcohol 1-nonanol, which is used as a plasticiser.
1-Octene has several uses in different industries, including:
