Chemical synthesis
When dissolved in water, it undergoes a hydrolysis to tert-butyl alcohol. When dissolved in alcohols, the corresponding t-butyl ethers are produced. It is also used to prepare the antioxidant tert-butylphenol and the fragrance neohexyl chloride.
