Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen (and so is covalently-bonded) with the formula NH3. In its pure form it is a colourless gas at room temperature with a characteristic pungent odour, however for ease of use it is commonly dissolved in water and referred to as liquid ammonia, aqueous ammonia or ammonia solution in its liquid state.
