Petroleum ether is also known as benzine, VM&P naphtha (varnish makers' & painters'), petroleum naphtha, petroleum spirits, X4 or ligroin. It is made up of various volatile, highly flammable, liquid hydrocarbon mixtures and is used mainly as a nonpolar solvent. Chemically, it is not classified as an ether, but as a light hydrocarbon.
