What is Petroleum Ether 40-60? It is a mixture made up of various volatile, highly flammable, liquid hydrocarbon compounds and is used mainly as a nonpolar solvent. Chemically, it is not classified as an ether, but as a light hydrocarbon. Alternate names for this mixture include benzine, VM&P naphtha (varnish makers' & painters'), petroleum naphtha, petroleum spirits, X4 or ligroin. The 40-60 refers to its boiling range in °C.
